Last Days of Sailing

20121021-002003.jpg

The last couple days of sailing have been amazing and we will be sad to say goodbye to the boat and our new friends. We’ve had great conversations, saw amazing scenery and learned about ancient cultures. Greece and Turkey have so many ancient ruins and we’ve enjoyed roaming the same places as Alexander the Great, Cleopatra and Mark Antony.

The hike was worth it!

Sailing around the Aegean Sea and doing lots of R, R and R – relaxation, reading and rays! Every harbor means a steep hill to climb, and it’s been worth it every time!

Thanks so much for the comments you leave – we look forward to reading them every chance we get!

Ahoy

Stopped at a small town and wanted to take advantage of the internet to share some photos!

We are having a wonderful time sailing on the gullet, thanks to the fantastic weather and friendly people traveling with us. We have been enjoying swims in the blue water, afternoon day hikes, local cuisine and sleeping on deck under the stars. Looking forward to a few more days of this!

Sailing

We will be sailing the Aegean Sea for the next week, and I’m not sure if we will have access to Internet. So for our blog followers, all two of you (Mom and Dad), the daily blog post might be a bit irregular this week. Looking forward to blue waters and sunshine!

Running the moat

During exploration we found a walking path around the city of Old Rhodes which once served as a moat. So we put on our running shoes and ran a few laps in the moat! It was one of the more unique runs we’ve done. Afterwards we treated our feet to a local cleansing and relaxation treatment – which as the photos show, we did not find to be typical or relaxing at all. I laughed for 10 minutes straight because it tickled so bad.

A note on Greek Salads – they are delicious here, one of my favorite foods, but not made the same as in the States. They contain tomato, cucumber, green pepper, onions (no lettuce) and are topped off with a block of feta. Yum!

209k of roads on Rhodes

Rented a car to explore the other side of the island. Saw everything from traditional Greek towns built on the hill, to ancient acropolis and endless pine forests and rocky coastlines. And we took advantage of the rental car (manual transmission) to teach Tiara to drive.

Castles and Crosses

20121009-230730.jpg

Old Town (Rhodes, Greece) is confined within the historic walls from Medieval times. Walking around inside is like stepping into the past with narrow, winding, arch covered stone streets. Even with a map we had to ask multiple people how to find our hotel in the maze.

After exploring the town, including the castle, and learning the streets so we could find our way back, we hiked to a high point on the Island, where a large cross sits. The view was amazing!

Islands

Today we left mainland Greece and traveled to the island of Rhodes. We are staying in Old Town, which is inside the old stone wall that protected the city during Medieval times. Looking forward to exploring this Island in the days to come.

Honeymoon Crashers

20121008-014601.jpg

This morning we hiked to see the acropolis – the structures are so cool and the view of Athens is breathtaking. Then we totally crashed Shana and Tim’s honeymoon! We were able to meet up with them in the afternoon for some site seeing around town including an unforgettable dinner and drinks with the acropolis in the background – so beautiful and memorable! Thanks Shana and Tim for sharing the night with us.
